Christopher Alexander: fit, misfit and the problem boundary
Alexander argued that good form is not added to a problem. It is the resolution of the problem's misfits, drawn at the right boundary.

Why this matters
Levels of Design turns on a diagnosis, that organizations ask isolated artifacts to solve problems that live in the system or the experience around them. The oldest and most rigorous version of that idea is Alexander's, in his account of fit, misfit and where the boundary of a problem is drawn. This is the first of a series, because his work spans several distinct ideas that recur across this site. It begins where his own work began, with fit.
The problem he was trying to solve
In Notes on the Synthesis of Form, published in 1964, Alexander asked how anyone can know a design is good, and how a designer can handle a problem too large and too tangled to hold in the head at once. His answer reframed the whole question. We cannot reliably perceive fit, he argued, but we can perceive misfit, the specific ways a form fails its context. Good form is what remains when the misfits have been resolved.
Core contributions
Fit is a relation between a form and its context, and the two are found together. Misfit is detectable where fit is not, so design proceeds by finding and removing misfits rather than by imagining perfection. A problem is a structure of interacting misfit variables, which can be decomposed into near-independent groups so that a designer can work on parts without losing the whole. And crucially, where the boundary of the problem is drawn decides what counts as a misfit at all.
What is commonly misunderstood
Two misreadings are common. The first treats fit as a matter of taste, when Alexander meant something closer to the absence of specific, nameable failures. The second remembers only the later pattern language and reduces Alexander to a catalog of reusable solutions, losing the deeper aim, a living wholeness that the patterns were only a means toward. Alexander himself came to reject the mechanical decomposition method of the 1964 book, a fact worth stating plainly rather than hiding.
Where the work remains strong
The core insight is durable and now everywhere. We detect misfit, not fit. A problem has a boundary, and drawing it in the wrong place is itself a design error. And parts gain their meaning from their relationships, so treating a part in isolation is how a design quietly fails. These hold across architecture, software and strategy.
Where it is contested
Alexander's mature work argues that wholeness is generated from the bottom up, out of the relationships among small centers, and cannot be imposed from above. That sits in genuine tension with any model that pictures a designer ascending to accept responsibility for the whole and then directing coherence downward. The tension is real, and it is more useful kept in view than smoothed away.
Where Jason agrees, and where he differs
Levels of Design shares Alexander's conviction that a problem has a boundary and that drawing it too small, around the artifact, leaves the misfit unresolved. It differs on the axis. Alexander grades fit; Levels of Design grades the responsibility a designer accepts, which is a different measure laid over the same terrain. And where Alexander insists wholeness rises from below, Levels of Design answers that a higher level of responsibility creates the conditions for coherence rather than dictating it, which is an attempt to hold his caution and still speak of levels.
