About The Colossal Man Commercial

In 2018/2019, Covenant Eyes collaborated with Harmon Brothers to create a set of video ads that would help us expand brand awareness around our software. I co-created Colossal Man with Creative Directors, Shane Rickard, and Johnny Vance.  The original commercials garnered over 15 million views collectively. Unfortunately, we weren’t prepared to follow up and exploit the momentum of the campaign. We utilized the footage of the campaign for the next couple years going into Covid, but never followed up with additional storytelling.  In late 2021, I decided that the property had too much potential to let it die and directed my team to write a new script that would focus Colossal Man’s journey to using our software. With no budget to hire a film crew or the original actors, I opted to try to produce an animated commercial, using puppet animation techniques.  This meant learning to build every aspect of the puppet animation scenes, breaking illustrations into layers, designing each scene for animation and optimal storytelling, and various other skills needed to produce a quality animation.

Insight 1:

People who need the Covenant Eyes product will try everything else multiple times before they opt to use an accountability product.

All of these alternative methods rely on personal willpower and only starve the addict of porn, rather than helping them grow away from it.

Insight 2:

The story that needs to be told is too big for an ad, or conventional informative content. To hold attention for the time it takes to deliver insight #1, we must use an entertaining and story driven method of capturing attention.

Strategy:

Use an animated version of Colossal Man to expand his story and show his journey to using Covenant Eyes in a way that mirrors the conventional journey of most of our users. This should build credibility and resonate with our target users.
